Coming in for regular dental cleanings is a key step in maintaining a disease-free mouth. Regular cleanings fight against plaque, which is the major cause of tooth decay, gingivitis and serious gum disease. These visits also allow Dr. Ertl and his staff to monitor you in order to catch potential problems early, before they become bigger (and more expensive) problems. Routine dental exams, and professional cleanings, play a crucial role in ensuring that you are able to keep your natural teeth for your entire life.
Why do I need regular dental cleanings?
Fighting plaque is a core part of preventative care, and Dr. Ertl can be your main ally in this effort. While daily brushing and flossing are your first line of defense against plaque, they won’t remove tartar or plaque that builds up below the gumline. A professional cleaning from Dr. Ertl or a dental hygienist is more thorough than the best you can do at home. Plus, routine cleanings give Dr. Ertl and his team the chance to spot minor problems before they become larger ones. Good hygiene and regular dental cleanings are cost-effective, too. In our experience, the cost of regular exams and cleanings works out to less than the cost of having teeth repaired and replaced.
What happens during a regular dental cleaning?
We nearly always schedule an exam and a cleaning during the same appointment. Your dental hygienist is an expert at giving teeth a thorough regular cleaning. We will remove stubborn plaque and tartar with specially designed dental tools. Tartar is the plaque which has hardened at and even below the gumline.
How often do I need cleanings?
Most adults require cleanings every six months. Persons with excellent oral hygiene may only require cleanings once a year. But if you are prone to tooth decay, tartar buildup or gum disease, Dr. Ertl may recommend more frequent appointments.
