As tartar, which is also known as calculus, begins to accumulate on teeth and below the gum line, it can cause irreversible bone loss which weakens the stability of perfectly good teeth. Research has shown that calculus can also cause vascular problems, heart issues and premature tooth loss. Not to mention, calculus causes long-term gum inflammation which causes them to be sore, sensitive and to bleed spontaneously. It can also cause very bad breath. A deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planing, can help make your mouth and your whole body healthy again.

When a large amount of decay occurs, and there is not enough healthy tooth structure above the gum line to do a restoration, then Dr. Ertl will recommend a crown. He may also recommend a crown when a large filling breaks or when a tooth is fractured. Crowns are long-lasting solutions that restore the functional and visual shape of a tooth, and they may also be used to protect teeth after root canal therapy.
VENEERS
If a tooth or teeth have wide gaps between them, excessive staining or are broken, then a veneer will create a wonderful smile. A veneer is a porcelain restoration that is placed on the vertical surface of the tooth to reshape it. The process of placing a veneer removes a smaller amount of your natural tooth as compared to that of a crown (cap).
